Save the Soil!

Ferns, mums, geraniums, and petunias, thrown to the curb in their pots, discarded as garbage along with their soil. When I walk along our sidewalks I see endless pots of soil thrown out to be picked up by the leaf collectors or garbage people. What are we thinking? Soil is a commodity. It takes endless time for it to be created by nature, yet we toss it thoughtlessly to the curb without recycling it.

Much to my husband’s dismay, I started collecting it and carrying it home. I’m sure it looks quite natural for someone to be carrying a dead, potted plant along the the sidewalk as she walks the dog, but who really cares?

I grabbed a crate and tossed it into it, put on my gloves and got to work. Needless to say it was quite an easy feat and proved itself useful as I recycled nearly a full crate of soil and then tossed the fading plants into the compost.

A couple days later, I noticed the recycled crate of soil missing. I asked my husband about it and he had put it in the compost bin. He thought it was a good place for it to get some nutrients for next year. Unknowingly, after some research, it was a great idea on his part. Giving the soil some time to recover, and add some nutrients naturally was the perfect thing to do.

He has been converted to my craziness. (hee, hee, hee)

It only takes a minute to make a bit of a difference!
